Contrary to the Trump administration’s claim that Iran is destabilizing the region and pursuing hegemony, Iran has in fact been a victim of regional instability—which has largely been a legacy of U.S. policies—and has legitimate security threats and needs. As one Iranian military officer has said, roughly 60 percent of Iran’s border are “not controlled by the neighboring country.”

One state supporting the ban treaty negotiations, Iran, can play a unique role in making the talks a success. Three chief reasons explain why Iran can and should be a strong advocate to advance the causes of nuclear non-proliferation and the elimination of all weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).

There is no effective and determining lobby and “track II diplomacy” between Iran and the United States, or at least, if such lobby exists, it is weaker and less efficient than ever. Even those Iranians with dual citizenship, who on their own discretion make efforts to counter the existing sanctions and pressures against Iran and modify the US public opinion, are not supported and are even under mounting pressure from lobby groups affiliated with Israel, Saudi Arabia and some other Arab countries that are active against Iran.

با این وجود، امید وجود دارد. یک نکته کلیدی استثنایی بودن انتخابات و دموکراسی ایران در منطقه است. ایران اولین انتخابات آزاد خود را در ۱۰۰ سال پیش تجربه کرد اما انرژی و ظرفیت‌هایی که براثر انتخابات اخیر در ایران بروز کرده، در منطقه بی‌مانند است. شبیه انتخابات اخیر ریاست جمهوری ایران را در انتخابات‌های اخیر در آمریکا و اروپا می‌توان مشاهده کرد در حالی که متحدین عرب منطقه‌ای آمریکا قبیله‌ای و فامیلی اداره شده و با ایران قابل مقایسه نیستند
