In order to trace down the current state of affairs in the Middle East—where a whole host of menaces ranging from terrorism, civil wars, and unrepresentative regimes are hallmarks of its politics—we need to have a thorough observation of the historical intricacies that have brought about this situation.

روابط سیاسی ایران و آمریکا بعد از انقلاب اسلامی ۱۳۵۷ از پیچیده ترین نوع روابط سیاسی تاریخ حکومتهاست. دو کشور خصمانه ترین روابط تاریخ معاصر را تجربه کرده اندو هردو هم هزینه های وحشتناکی متحمل شده اند. ابعاد بی اعتمادی، تصویر و تصورات اشتباه، محاسبات غلط و عدم درک صحیح ،متقابل و فوق العاده وسیع و عمیق است.
عجیب است ضمن که هر دو کشور یکدیگر را دشمن اول تلقی میکند، بهبود هیچ رابطه ای هم به اندازه روابط ایران و آمریکا دشمن خارجی نداردو هیچ رابطه ای هم در داخل هر دو کشور با این حجم از مخالفت مواجه نبوده و نیست.
