برخلاف ادعای دولت ترامپ در مورد اینکه ایران عامل بی‌ثباتی و هژمونی بر منطقه است، حقیقت این است که ایران قربانی بی‌ثباتی‌هایی است که آمریکا در منطقه به ارث گذاشته، با تهدیدات امنیتی جدی مواجه است و لذا نگرانی‌های مشروع امنیتی دارد. واقعیت محیط امنیتی پیرامونی ایران این است که ۶۰ درصد از مرزهای ایران از کنترل دولت‌های کشورهای همسایه خارج است

Contrary to the Trump administration’s claim that Iran is destabilizing the region and pursuing hegemony, Iran has in fact been a victim of regional instability—which has largely been a legacy of U.S. policies—and has legitimate security threats and needs. As one Iranian military officer has said, roughly 60 percent of Iran’s border are “not controlled by the neighboring country.”

One state supporting the ban treaty negotiations, Iran, can play a unique role in making the talks a success. Three chief reasons explain why Iran can and should be a strong advocate to advance the causes of nuclear non-proliferation and the elimination of all weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).

There is no effective and determining lobby and “track II diplomacy” between Iran and the United States, or at least, if such lobby exists, it is weaker and less efficient than ever. Even those Iranians with dual citizenship, who on their own discretion make efforts to counter the existing sanctions and pressures against Iran and modify the US public opinion, are not supported and are even under mounting pressure from lobby groups affiliated with Israel, Saudi Arabia and some other Arab countries that are active against Iran.
