Mousavian: I am not optimistic because Netanyahu wants to buy time until after the U.S. elections. He hopes that if Trump wins, he can push forward his agenda. He is facing with ICJ ruling on Genocide and possible warrant arrest. He is facing a domestic crisis, international isolation, and unprecedented pressure from global public opinion. Therefore, he is trying to drag the U.S. into a regional war. And recently, he is trying to prolong the negotiations to increase international pressure on Tehran, preventing it from launching a military attack in retaliation of Haniyeh assassination in Tehran
The fact is that Qatar, Egypt and the US initiative is based on a plan proposed by US President Joe Biden in May which includes ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza, exchange of hostages, major reconstruction plan for Gaza. Hamas accepted the Plan but Netanyahu rejected. He said no Gaza ceasefire until Israel’s war aims are achieved.
Since Biden’s Plan in May 2024. the only tangible results have been the assassination of Hamas peace negotiator, Haniyeh, shipping US weapons to Israel and killing and displacing more Palestine. Just last week, the US agreed to ship selling $20bn worth of weapons to Israel, one of the largest military packages since the beginning of the Gaza war.
On Haniyeh assassinations in Tehran Iran wants to have a significant response to prevent Israel from future invasion of Iranian territory and violating Iran’s sovereignty. However, Iran does not want to engage in a war with the US.
