“One of President Obama’s policies reversed by the Trump administration is the nuclear agreement with Iran, which President Trump refused to recertify, saying it was not in America’s interest. Thursday evening at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, former U.N. Ambassador Thomas Pickering will be part of a discussion on U.S.-Iran relations and the nuclear deal, which will also include former ambassador and diplomat for Iran and now Princeton University scholar Seyed Hossein Mousavian.”

“A few days ago at Willard Hotel, during a meeting on US’ lack of commitment to the Iran-G5+1 nuclear deal, prominent disarmament expert from one of the US think tanks said that despite all the Riyadh-Tel Aviv-Abu Dhabi pressures, the chances are remote that the Congress will decertify the Deal, unless in the coming few weeks, some new developments happen to change the Congress’ equations.”

The solution is to not fall for this psychological ploy. International banks and companies should rest assured that nuclear-related sanctions on Iran are gone for good and that there is nothing the United States can do — neither now nor in the future — to reimpose them without destroying its credibility at the same time. Iranian officials, meanwhile, should be careful to not play into the hands of the deal’s American opponents and increase uncertainty about the future of the JCPOA.

It’s Time for Republicans to Abandon Their Short-Sighted Approach to Iran

Republican intransigence over the Iran nuclear deal has proven to be futile, with Democratic senators successfully filibustering a Republican motion of disapproval last Thursday. However, this has not prevented the GOP from pursuing other inventive ways to derail this landmark diplomatic achievement. Sadly, the main consequence of dead-end Republican revanchism over the Iran deal is that it has reinforced highly insular mindsets — characterized by an “us-against-them” mentality — with respect to Iran.

In no circumstance has black and white moralizing ever given an accurate depiction of reality, least of all in regards to modern day Iran — a society far more complex and pluralistic than what many Westerners believe. By constantly shouting crude slogans denigrating Iran and spinning a spider’s web of misinformation about the country, Iran deal obstructionists are in fact acting in ways wholly counterproductive to the cause of international peace and security.
